How to Calculate Copper Area from PCB Gerber Files with GerbView

Copper area is useful information when reviewing a PCB design. It can help you compare copper coverage between layers or check whether a design change has substantially altered a copper layer.

Gerber files contain the geometry sent for manufacturing. With GerbView, you can calculate copper surface areas from PCB layers in the Gerber data, without reopening the original PCB design project.

Why calculate copper area?

A visual inspection shows where copper appears, but it doesn’t give you a measurement of how much copper is present. An area calculation gives you a value you can record and compare.

For example, you might use it to:

  • Compare the copper areas of two layers in the same board

  • Check how a design revision changed a copper layer

  • Record layer measurements as part of an internal review

  • Compare exported data with a previous release

The result describes the copper geometry in the files you review. It does not, by itself, confirm that the board is electrically correct or predict its finished weight or performance.

Prepare the Gerber data

Start by opening the relevant Gerber files in GerbView. Identify the copper layers you want to examine and make sure you’re working with the correct board revision.

If the manufacturing package includes negative Gerber layers, check that they are interpreted correctly before calculating area. GerbView supports displaying negative layers in positive form, which can make them easier to inspect alongside other PCB data.

For a revision comparison, keep the two releases separate and note which files belong to each one. Comparing the same layer from each release makes the resulting measurements easier to interpret.

Calculate the copper area

Use GerbView’s copper area calculation tool on the copper layer or layers you want to review. Calculate each layer separately if you want to compare them individually, and record the result together with the filename and revision.

A simple record could include:

PCB revisionLayerCopper area
Rev ATop copper—
Rev ABottom copper—
Rev BTop copper—
Rev BBottom copper—

Keeping the layer names and revision information with each result helps prevent comparisons between unrelated files.

Compare results carefully

A difference in copper area between two revisions can be a useful signal to investigate. It may reflect a changed copper pour, added or removed geometry, or another design update.

The number alone does not explain why the area changed. Use it alongside a visual review of the Gerber layers, and compare the revisions if you need to identify the changed geometry. Also confirm that you are comparing the same layer function and board area in both releases.

What the measurement does not tell you

Copper area is one measurement of the exported geometry. It does not establish whether clearances, connections, drill locations or other manufacturing details are correct. It also does not account for every factor that affects the finished board, such as copper thickness or the manufacturing process.

Treat the result as a review aid, alongside visual inspection and any other checks required for your board.

Review your Gerber data with GerbView

GerbView can open PCB manufacturing files and includes a tool for calculating copper surface areas on PCB layers. You can also use it to inspect layers, measure geometry, compare Gerber files and convert PCB data.

Why an Offline PDF and CAD Viewer Still Matters

Cloud-based document tools have become common, but they are not always the right choice—especially when working with confidential engineering drawings, customer documents, manufacturing data or internal design revisions.

In many organizations, technical files should remain inside the company’s own IT environment. Uploading a drawing to an online viewer or conversion service may introduce privacy, security or contractual concerns.

ViewCompanion Premium offers a practical alternative by allowing PDF, CAD and other technical files to be viewed and processed locally on a Windows computer.

Keep Technical Documents Within Your Environment

ViewCompanion is installed directly on your computer and processes supported documents locally. Files can be opened from the computer or from an accessible company network location without first being transferred to a cloud service.

The workflow is straightforward:

  1. Open the document locally.

  2. Inspect, measure, annotate or compare it.

  3. Print it or convert it to the required format.

  4. Save the result locally.

No online account or hosted viewing platform is required. The core viewing, printing, markup, measurement, comparison and conversion features can also be used without an Internet connection.

This makes ViewCompanion particularly relevant for engineering teams, manufacturers, contractors and other organizations that need to retain control over sensitive documents.

More Than an Offline File Viewer

An offline viewer should provide more than basic file display. Technical drawings often need to be checked, measured, marked up, compared or converted before they can be approved or shared.

ViewCompanion Premium includes tools for:

  • Viewing and navigating drawings and multipage documents

  • Adding comments, stamps, symbols and other annotations

  • Measuring distances, polylines and areas

  • Comparing different versions of a drawing

  • Printing technical documents

  • Converting files to PDF, TIFF and other formats

  • Batch printing or converting multiple files

  • Processing scanned documents with OCR

  • Creating and validating PDF/A documents

These capabilities make it possible to complete much of the technical document workflow within one desktop application.

Support for Modern and Legacy Formats

Engineering archives rarely contain only one file format. A project may include recent PDF or DWG drawings alongside older plotter, raster or document files.

ViewCompanion Premium supports a broad selection of formats, including:

  • PDF

  • DWG and DXF

  • DWF and DWFX

  • PLT and HPGL/2

  • CGM

  • TIFF and CALS

  • PNG, JPEG and WebP

DWG support is included in ViewCompanion Premium, allowing users to open, inspect, print, annotate, measure and convert AutoCAD drawing files.

A Safer Approach to Reviewing PDF Documents

PDF files can contain embedded JavaScript and other interactive content. ViewCompanion does not execute JavaScript embedded in PDF documents, removing an unnecessary source of active content during document review.

This does not replace normal security procedures, but it can be a useful consideration for organizations that regularly receive documents from customers, suppliers or other external sources.

Local Software for Privacy-Conscious Workflows

Online viewers are useful in many situations, but local desktop software remains important when documents must stay within a controlled environment.

ViewCompanion Premium provides a single Windows application for viewing, measuring, annotating, comparing, printing and converting technical documents—without requiring those files to be uploaded to an online service.
